The eight mile perimeter around Alton Water offers a popular variety of routes suitable for cyclists of differing abilities, from rugged and hilly unsurfaced tracks to purpose-built routes suitable for the young and inexperienced.

Alton Water Campsite is now closed. Bookings for 2021 are now open.
Can you swim in Alton Water?
Anyone wanting to try open water swimming or cool off this summer can do so safely at a lifeguarded or supervised site, or at the specifically designated beach area at Rutland Water where highly trained lifeguards are on duty. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our water parks and most importantly to stay safe.
Is Alton water open for fishing?
Access to angling, watersports, mini golf, cycle hire and non-essential retail shops remain closed until further notice.
Is Rutland Water open for visitors?
We have two visitor centres – one at Egleton, which is open daily all year round and one at Lyndon (home of the Rutland Opsreys) which is open April – September.

When was Alton Water reservoir built?
Construction and the filling with water took 13 years to complete. Alton Reservoir was opened in 1987 and is fed from the River Gipping and bore holes on the north side of the River Orwell.
