In a triathlon you want to wear what is called a triathlon suit or a triathlon kit (a top/bottom combo) designed to be worn in the swim, the bike, and finally the run. In other words, you do not take it off! With the exception of the wetsuit (if needed), you need not put on any other piece of clothing.
What to wear triathlon women?
- Swimsuit Only. In warm climates, triathletes wear a performance swimsuit for the entirety of the race. You usually swim in a pool or in open water that is too warm for a wetsuit, so supportive, skin-tight trunks for men or a one-piece suit for women is appropriate.

Do you change clothes during a triathlon?
Clothing for a Triathlon You can opt to change into clothes specific to each leg of the race —or not. Some triathletes choose to do the whole race in a swimsuit for quicker transitions. Other swimmers simply pull on a pair of shorts before jumping on their bike. In general, tri clothing should fit snugly.
Can I swim shirtless in a triathlon?
I think some go shirtless for the whole race, though that isn’t always legal. There maybe some drag from the pockets, but the tri top is designed to be slick (not as slick as a swim skin) and the compression can help reduce overall drag. I’d wear it for the swim, or not at all.
Can you swim in a triathlon suit?
The top is usually sleeveless. The bottom is similar to a cycling short, with jammer length legs, but the pad in the tri short is lightweight. This helps make the suit more comfortable for swimming. After the swim, the thin pad dries out quickly and doesn’t feel like a big, wet diaper on the bike ride.
Do triathletes Pee on the bike?
On to the matter at hand – yes, some triathletes do, in fact, pee on their bikes. If it’s not obvious, triathletes pee while riding their bike so they don’t have to stop – saving precious time for competitive races.
What should a woman wear for a triathlon?
Some women can get away with a tight triathlon suit, while others are more comfortable in a sporty swimsuit top or a moisture-wicking sports bra that will not get saturated during the swim. Make sure all your attire, including your sports bra, is ‘tried and true’ come race day.
Can you wear headphones in an Ironman?
While the official Ironman rules do not forbid you from possessing a phone, their rules do render the device pretty much useless. If you carry your phone or any electronic device – including smartwatches or headphones – you are not able to use it in a “distractive manner”.
Are you allowed to listen to music during a triathlon?
No Tunes, No Selfies Headphones, headsets and audio devices are not allowed at any time during any triathlon event. Most races allow you to carry your cell phone if you wish, but it must be stored out of sight in a bike bag or jersey pocket.
What top should I wear for a triathlon?
Triathlon Tops Many racers will choose a triathlon-specific top, often called a singlet, for racing. Singlets can be nice because they can be comfortable for activities such as cycling or running, even outside of a tri race. Good singlets range in price from $40 to $100, depending on the maker and the quality.
Do you wear socks in triathlon?
Most pro triathletes don’t wear socks for sprint and Olympic distance events and are wearing some for longer events. However, over a full Ironman distance, it is rather insignificant. The comfort of socks over such a big distance is, for most people, well worth those couple of seconds.
Why are triathlons so expensive?
So far, that leaves us with this: Traveling to races in the U.S. is expensive because it takes more time and more hotel nights should you venture across the country or up a mountain. In Germany, people happily flick $30 to race organizers for a sprint. (See: Ravensburger Triathlon, now in its 33rd year.)
Do triathlons provide bikes?
The most common bicycles found in a typical race transition area include triathlon, road, mountain and hybrid. As the race becomes more competitive, such as USA Triathlon National Championships or IRONMAN, the majority of bicycles in the transition area are triathlon bikes and perhaps a few road bikes.
Do you wear a bra under a tri suit?
You should not wear underwear (except a sports bra) under your trisuit in a race. Additionally, your underwear could retain water and counteract the quick drying properties of your suit.
Can you backstroke in a triathlon?
Backstroke is rarely used during a triathlon, but it is a great stroke to incorporate into your training because it helps your shoulders unwind after sticking with one specific stroke for a while. Backstroke is extremely useful when you need a bit of a rest period or if the water is choppy on race day.
Do you wear anything under a tri suit?
Nope, you don’t need to wear underwear under a tri-suit. Your tri-suit won’t come off from the moment you start a race – either under a wetsuit or on its own if the water is warm enough – until you’ve crossed the finish line, so if you want to go commando you’re more than welcome!
